What is Gum Disease?
Healthy gums should be pink and fit tightly around your teeth. When you brush or floss, they should not bleed. If your gums bleed without any injury, it could be an early sign of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.
This bleeding occurs due to the constant irritation from plaque and tartar, which are made up of food debris, saliva, and bacteria that build up on your teeth. The bacteria release toxins that trigger an inflammatory response in your gums. This inflammation can cause bleeding, attachment loss, and bone loss, signaling the presence of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontal disease, depending on its severity).
Gum disease has also been linked to serious health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory diseases, cancer, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and other systemic health issues. Healthy gums are essential for maintaining overall health.
