What is Gum Disease?
In a healthy, normal state, gums appear to be pink and tightly fitted around the teeth and when you brush or floss your teeth, they do not bleed. If your gums do bleed without injury, you may be experiencing the beginning stages of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.
This non-injury bleeding is caused by the constant irritation of the unmoved stick plaque and/or tartar consisting of food debris mixed in with saliva and bacteria that are on the teeth surfaces.
The bacteria put out an exotoxin that stimulates a defense action in the gums. This defense action is the inflammation which causes bleeding, attachment loss and bone loss. This is known as gum disease (aka gingivitis or periodontal disease depending on the severity of the disease).
Gum Disease has also been known to be linked to Cardio-vascular Disease, Stroke, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Respiratory Diseases, Cancer, Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s Disease and other systemic diseases. Hence, it is vital to have healthy gums to have good overall health.
